Constellations Showcase

Exceptional theatre makers share their brand new works in progress

Enjoy a first look at works in progress at this creative sharing session. Experience new work from exceptional theatre makers developed here at Tara Theatre.

Six talented theatre makers were chosen to take part in Tara Theatre’s pioneering Constellations Residency. After an intensive week of masterclasses and 3 weeks working with dedicated producers, our makers develop a project of their choosing. Works range across cabaret, physical theatre, digital, writing and verbatim theatre and themes cover memory, identity, trauma, mental health, grief, environment, politics and race, in a one-of-a-kind event that gives you a rare glimpse into the creative process.

Our Constellations Residency has offered a paid, playful, experimental and nourishing environment to create new work to theatre makers with 3 – 5 years of experience, read more about our extensive Artist Development programme and all the work we are doing to drive change within the UK theatre landscape, addressing the lack of diversity and representation and challenging our industry.

There are two showings each day with 3 different pieces (6 pieces total). To see all pieces, you will need to book for ‘Showing 1’ and  ‘Showing 2’ either on the same day or across both days. See below.

SHOWING 1

SUBIKA ANWAR-KHAN

Through a thought-provoking lens, ‘Echo’ delves into the complexities of Western media’s portrayal of conflicts in Ukraine, Afghanistan, and Palestine, and how it can lead to feelings of betrayal and hypocrisy among supporters of human rights. Odd, witty, and analytical, Echo explores the consequences of regular and instant exposure to devastation thousands of miles away and our desire to help, be seen and heard in an environment where we are not.

MOHIT MATHUR

“I am here because you were there”.

This powerful narrative drawing on intergenerational trauma, immigration, heritage, and roots was developed from questioning the way history is taught around the world, omitting key horrific events. Rooted in the trauma of the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre, which took place 100 years ago when India was a British Colony, the performance asks important questions about identity and belonging, and how history shapes our society and culture

VICTORIA CHEN

Go to the ends of the earth for love, as the world ends. This project is a post-apocalyptic anti-musical that explores the climate crisis through the metaphor of an estranged relationship. Through a compelling combination of science and art, this epic tale of romance and survival draws parallels between the stages of environmental degradation and the stages of a failing relationship. Caring for the environment is a personal act of love. After all, why fall in love if the future isn’t there for us to live in?

SHOWING 2

ZAKIYYAH DEEN

Obtaining a seat in a theatre is far easier than obtaining a seat in parliament. Sociopolitical, honest, and satirical, this piece explores the harsh realities of politics through the chance encounters of a young black woman from South London and an ex-mayor (soon-to-be prime minister). This powerful piece of political theatre offers an insightful portrayal of the barriers and systemic issues faced by those less heard in the political sphere.

THARA SCHÖÖN

Personal, reflective and transient, this semi-autobiographical performance takes you on a journey of self-discovery and connection. Follow along as the protagonist attempts to make sense of the world around and outside of herself, while struggling to connect with her father who is losing his mind to aphasia and early onset dementia. This deeply personal performance is a meditation on the many facets of identity, consciousness, and the self.

DANIEL PASSI

A Dream Song is an original adaptation of the work of early 20th century Bengali poet, graphic artist, and writer Sukumar Ray. Enter a world of absurdity, physicality, and rhythm, as a narrator recalls a hot day in a forest where he witnesses animals staging a trial. The rhythmic links and magical-realisms that reverberate throughout the so-called Global South through the story of a regular man who just can’t stand the heat. Experience a sensorial adventure with live music and the collaboration of creatives from different backgrounds, set in a South Asian theatre.
