Tara Film Club proudly present Fremont, directed by Babak Jalali to celebrate Refugee Week 2025
Donya, a lonely Afghan refugee and former translator, spends her twenties drifting through a meager existence in Fremont, California.
Shuttling between her job writing fortunes for a fortune cookie factory and sessions with her eccentric therapist, Donya suffers from insomnia and survivor’s guilt over those still left behind in Kabul as she desperately searches for love.

Burnt Milk, directed by Joseph Douglas-Elmhirst (10mins)
Burnt Milk centers around a monologue by Una, an isolated Jamaican woman in London around 1985. As she takes a moment of solace to make Burnt Milk, she is flooded with spiritual imagery that takes her home.
Journey Mercies, directed by Tomisin Adepeju (15mins)
A short drama about a library cleaner who plans a final return to Nigeria, his birth country.

Tara Film Club is a weekly screening at Tara Theatre showcasing the very best of South Asian and Global Cinema. It’s a project the whole Tara Theatre team are thrilled to share with our community.
Our Tara Film Club is a relaxed, informal space to bring a film loving community together to appreciate classic movies as well as the latest in innovative, groundbreaking and political contemporary cinema. Come to our building, tuck into our wide range of specialty popcorn, and meet like-minded individuals, all whilst enjoying industry leading cinema in our stunning, intimate theatre space.
