Grewal Twins

Sukhman & Hernoor – better known as the GREWAL TWINS – are singers & storytellers born in Surrey and raised in West London.

Through their music (neo-Punjabi folk & Sufi genre), the sisters aim to reintroduce the shared heritage of undivided Panjab to a contemporary audience. They also tell stories of migration and identity through photo and videos which they both curate and direct.

As graduates of History and Politics, they are both deeply drawn to nostalgia; particularly Panjabi heritage / folk music and its ability to tell a story of a people, time and place.

With a particular focus on the women’s narrative, Sukhman & Hernoor hope to use their voices to amplify the maternal figures before them, who were often denied the use of their very own voices.  In this way, they believe they can honour and preserve the legacy of their female ancestors to keep their stories and traditions alive.

Over the last few years, Sukhman and Hernoor have engaged in much needed conversation about raising the profile of women, specifically within the South Asian community. They have been featured in Huffington Post via the Pink Ladoo Project – a campaign that aims to celebrate the girl child, and they have also addressed various taboo topics within the South Asian community, such as; gender discrimination, caste discrimination, domestic violence and toxic masculinity, to name a few.

Some of the places they have performed at /with/ for include: Rajasthan International Folk Festival (India) Houses of Parliament UK, Ernst & Young, Guildhall London, Beck Theatre, Richmix, Dishoom, Victoria & Albert Museum, Union Chapel,  British Library and Sounds of Kolachi band (featured on Coke Studio Pakistan – Season 11)
