Set in 1970s Banglatown, Made in Bangladesh follows Rizwana, a single mother of 3, as she works to sustain her family. Amid the global boom in the cheap ‘ready-to-wear’ garment industry, Rizwana’s learned to sew tops she wouldn’t be caught dead in and skirts she wouldn’t let her daughter wear for stores in West London she’d never shop in. Over the years she’s gathered a group of women, once colleagues, now dear friends, to sew with her, and now her at-home factory is notorious for its expert workmanship and ruthless wit.
When word spreads that a spanking new factory is opening up, Rizwana’s friends are convinced this means big changes. She’s long outgrown her 2 bed flat and team of 4. Every supplier in the East End knows- if you want the job done fast and well, you take it to Rizwana. Anyone would be crazy not to hire her to man the women’s floor, the whole factory even. But Rizwana’s a realist. She wouldn’t let herself get swept away by dreams of stable pay, workers’ rights and above all, getting those damn sewing machines out of her living room.
Or would she?

WHAT IS SOUTH ASIAN PLAY READING GROUP?
Each session we will be reading a different play written by a writer of South Asian heritage. These will be a combination of new plays that are at different stages of development in addition to older legacy texts that haven’t been seen for a while and everything else in between.
It’s a fantastic opportunity to meet and connect with other creatives in a friendly and welcoming artistic environment. Many previous participants have gone on to write their own work which has received successful R&Ds as well as commissions, citing how useful Tara Theatre’s play reading group has been as a part of their professional journeys.
We are proud to offer this group entirely for FREE. However, if you’d like to make a donation to support our theatre and ensure we can continue running projects like this, you can do so here.
THE FORMAT
The play will be read aloud by our willing script readers, and then as a whole group we will have a lively discussion about the text. You can participate in the group as a reader, or as someone who is there to hear the text and share in the discussion.
The group will be led by Tara Theatre’s Associate Director Gavin Joseph, with sessions throughout the season led by special guests.
