Magdalen Rubalcava

Magdalen studied Fashion and Textiles at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin, and Theatre Design at Central Saint Martins. She received an Arts Council Bursary upon leaving Central Saint Martins to spend a year at Covent Garden Opera House, assisting Royal Ballet Theatre designer Yolanda Sonnabend.

After leaving Covent Garden, she was introduced to Tara Theatre (previously Tara Arts) and had the privilege of being the resident designer there for seven years, working with the renowned director Jatinder Verma.

Magdalen has designed for Extemporary Dance Company, DV8, and Union Dance Company. She has also designed shows for theatre director Arti Prashar, Spare Tyre Theatre Company, and created a float for the Lord Mayor’s Show a collaboration between Spare Tyre Theatre Company and Veolia.

Magdalen has worked in Lambeth as an installation artist, designing and making floats for the Lambeth New Year’s Day Parade and installations in Lambeth Town Hall’s flowerbeds. She was commissioned to design and build a 25ft-high Christmas tree from 500 smelly old workwear boots for Southwark Recycling Centre.

Additionally, she has worked as a Community Researcher for the Dulwich Picture Gallery “The Past into the Present”.
