Refugee Week is a celebration of the contributions, creativity and resilience of people seeking sanctuary. This special film night brings together three remarkable films that explore themes of migration, memory, identity and hope through distinct and deeply human stories.
The programme opens with two acclaimed short films. Migrants (2020, 8 mins), an award-winning animated film by Hugo Caby, Antoine Dupriez, Aubin Kubiak, Lucas Lermytte and Zoé Devise, follows two polar bears forced from their home by climate change, offering a poignant reflection on migration, survival and coexistence.
Also screening is Aziza (2019, 13 mins), directed by Soudade Kaadan. Blending humour, tenderness and surrealism, the film follows a Syrian refugee living in Lebanon as he teaches his wife to drive in the couple’s treasured car, the last remaining link to the life they left behind.
The evening concludes with the feature presentation, Dreamers (2025, 78 mins), Joy Gharoro-Akpojotor’s powerful drama set within a UK immigration removal centre. The film follows Isio, a Nigerian migrant whose freedom is under threat. Amid confinement and uncertainty, she forms an unexpected connection that offers solidarity, love and the possibility of imagining a future beyond the fences.
Together, these films offer different perspectives on displacement and belonging, highlighting both the challenges faced by those forced to leave home and the resilience, humanity and imagination that endure.
