Tara Theatre are delighted to welcome the Decolonise Choir to our building as part of Wandsworth’s South Asian Heritage Month celebrations. Join us for an evening of creativity and collaboration.
Led by Ishani Jasmin alongside Decolonise Choir members, you will get the chance to learn songs, write one together as a collective and then perform with the choir at the end of the night.
Decolonise Choir is a choir for people of global majority. This project is supported by Decolonise Fest, a festival by and for punx of colour focused on programming alternative and punk musicians of colour. Decolonise Choir was formed by community musician and organiser Ishani Jasmin, aiming to create a space for our global majority community to experience the joy, the resistance, and the healing of singing together. We aim to use collective song and songwriting to exist and to coexist.
What to expect:
- Somatic practice and grounding ourselves in song and in our bodies
- Co-creating an anthem
- Singing and healing together
Musical experience welcome but not needed.
Manifesto
- This choir is a space crafted for and by people of colour
- Collective singing is a radical act of joy, and joy is an act of resistance
- We embrace music as a balm for individual and collective trauma within the POC community
- Discrimination has no place here
- We demand and create space to celebrate the diversity of POC voices
- We all shape the tapestry of our collective sound
