Tara Theatre named in The 2023 Stage 100 List

6 January 2023

Every year The Stage team sets out to compile a list of the most influential people in theatre – The Stage 100.

We are thrilled that Tara Theatre’s joint CEO’s Abdul Shayek and Helen Jeffreys have been named on The 2023 Stage 100 list.

First published in 1997, The Stage 100 traditionally reflects the 100 most influential people working in the theatre and performing arts industry. Now in its 26th year, it is the definitive list focusing on achievements in the past 12 months, but also taking into account overall standing in the industry. In 2023 the list celebrates those who had gone above and beyond to help the sector’s recovery, and Shayek and Jeffreys’ inclusion reflects the impact they have had in their roles at Tara Theatre.

Our venue has been at the forefront of celebrating and amplifying South Asian stories and artists. Under the leadership of Shayek and Jeffreys, Tara Theatre has pushed the boundaries of traditional theatre and has become a hub for innovative and thought-provoking performances. In 2022, we partnered with the Donmar Warehouse to present the world premiere of Silence which marked the 75th anniversary of Partition in India, offering a fresh perspective on this pivotal historical moment. We also offered an immersive virtual reality experience inspired by the 1971 Bangladeshi War of Independence, giving audiences an unparalleled level of engagement with the story inspired by true accounts. Additionally, we have established a commissioning scheme to further expand the canon of British South Asian plays.

The inclusion of Shayek and Jeffreys on The Stage 100 list highlights their dedication to creating meaningful and impactful theatre that tells important stories and reflects the diversity of the industry. It is a well-deserved recognition of their hard work and dedication to their craft.

Abdul Shayek said: “A really nice way to start the year, being named with Helen Jeffreys on this list with so many brilliant people. We couldn’t have done any of it without our fantastic team and board, who are all so caring, joyous and energetic!”
