Saqib Deshmukh
Saqib has been writing poetry since 1985 and within a few years was one the first UK Asian poets on the scene. He has performed with Lemn Sissay, Benjamin Zephaniah, Linton Kwesi Johnson and Akala. In 1984 whilst he was still at school, he set up Action In Reaction (AIR) Theatre, a young people’s collective that was supported by the Greater London Council (GLC). They wrote their own material and in 1987-1988 toured with a play called ‘BLACK AND BLUE’ on the theme of deaths in custody.
In 1989 he set up Aajkal Theatre in Manchester which was the first Asian company in the North-West and which built up a cult reputation in the early nineties through plays like ‘RUNNING’, ‘BROTHERS’ and ‘THIS TV DOES NOT SPEAK PUNJABI’. In 1998 he was approached by the group Aik Saath in Slough to work on a piece about interfaith conflict which produced the play ‘DOSTOH’ the following year.
In 2003 he was commissioned by Wycombe Youth Action to co-write a Black History Musical called ‘REWIND’ with local young people which was performed at the Swan Theatre/Wycombe Town Hall in 2004/2005.
In 2008 he produced and directed an adaptation of ‘ANTIGONE’ set in Palestine and Sri Lanka for Highfields Community Association in Leicester. He wrote his first dodgy novel ‘WEST RICHARDSON STREET’ in 2014 and is threatening more…
In his spare time, he likes to run and play vinyl especially hip hop and has been a DJ and a founder member of the crew Kaliphz in the 90’s.
